Windows for the children's room - how to choose them?

When decorating a house or flat, we are guided by our comfort, aesthetic considerations and functionality. However, it is worth bearing in mind the safety of the household members, especially if you have children. The children's room is our little ones' oasis. Here they play, learn and sleep. Children can surprise adults with their ideas and imagination, which is why it is so important to plan a safe space for them.

One of the elements we need to pay attention to is the windows. Below you can find our suggestions for which solutions, available on the market, are worth considering when designing your child's room.

What parameters to look out for?

Every parent wants to provide the best possible environment for their child and tries to ensure that the place where the child spends the most time is comfortable and safe. The right windows create the optimal atmosphere in the room where the child sleeps and plays. Aspects that parents should pay particular attention to include:

Energy efficiency

New windows must meet the standards set by the European Union, but it is worth examining the available solutions, paying attention to the Uw thermal transmittance coefficient. The lower the coefficient value, the better the protection against heat escape. Energy-efficient windows will not only help maintain the optimum temperature on cold days, but also have an impact on heating costs.

Ventilation and humidification

Paradoxically, it happens that windows that are too airtight can also be a problem when the ventilation system in the building is not working properly. If this happens, dampness, foggy windows and even mould can occur, which will affect the wellbeing or health of your children. Opening windows in the little one’s room during bad weather can also pose a risk to their health.

For these reasons, it is worth choosing windows equipped with hygrocontrolled ventilators. The control mechanism is based on a hygrometer - a small, precise device that measures the relative humidity in the room and directly controls the airflow, adjusting the ventilation system's performance according to the humidity level.

In the child's room, in order not to expose their young body to harmful external factors such as smog, it is possible to install ventilators that are equipped with additional filters.

Noise protection

If the windows in the children's room face a busy street, the neighbours’ terrace is right next to it or the building is located in a noisy area such as a railway track, it is worth paying attention to the Rw sound insulation value. The higher the value of this coefficient, the better the noise protection and dampening of sounds coming from outside.  A restful sleep is extremely important for a child's health and development.

Most importantly, safety

Children have different ideas and are not always able to foresee the consequences when they play.

Window glass manufactured nowadays is quite difficult to break by accident. However, there is always the risk that a child will unknowingly throw a heavy object at the glass, which will cause the glass to break. A solution to avoid the disastrous consequences of such a situation, i.e. the child being injured by pieces of glass, is to choose so-called 'safety glass', in which the panes are covered with a film. The solution will ensure that even if the glass is broken, it will not break into pieces, but will be held in place by the film.

Another option is toughened glass, which shatters into many non-sharp pieces when damaged. Even when cleaning up such debris, it is difficult to injure yourself. By choosing to use the right glazing, we do not have to fear that our child will be harmed while playing, even if the glass is broken.

Another element that is important for children’s safety is the window handles. Unfortunately, every year we hear in the media about tragic accidents involving a child falling out of a window. In order to limit the child's ability to open the window by themselves, it is worth considering choosing a handle with a key. Once the key is removed from the window, there is no way to open it.

More light in the child's room

When choosing windows for your child's room, it is also worth analysing the subject of the glass itself. Glazing with higher solar transmittance is available on the market and such glazing makes rooms appear more spacious and brighter. Greater access to natural light improves mood and promotes learning.

Window colours

The window sills and the material from which they are made are undoubtedly key elements to consider when choosing windows, but let's not forget aesthetic considerations. Nowadays, when buying windows we have a really huge choice of woodgrain colours and a wide range of non-standard colours, from classic browns, to bold yellows, reds and greens, to subdued shades of grey or black.

How to cover a window in your child's room?

At the window selection stage, it is worth thinking about ways to cover the windows. One option is external blinds, which allow the room to be completely darkened. They protect it well from the sun, prevent the room from heating up in summer and from heat loss in winter. We discussed the available solutions in detail here: Types of external roller blinds

Façade blinds are an alternative to external blinds. Their advantage is that the amount of light entering the room can be adjusted by changing the angle of the blinds.

If the windows in the child's room face north, the amount of sunshine during the day is not high and there are no blinds or shutters in the building, there are many textile roller blind solutions available on the market.

When choosing windows for the children's room, remember that it is worth going for high quality.  Children are growing and their needs are changing, but a functional, well-chosen window with solid profiles can serve us for many years.
